Every
winter, the white sand salt marshes of Kutch comes alive with a riot of
colours. This year, the festival will be celebrated between 1 November
2018 and 20 Feb 2019, during the chilly winter months when the desert is
most attractive. The festival celebrates the unique culture of Gujarat
with music and dance performances, storytelling sessions, walks through
the desert, fabulous displays of
handicrafts and of course some authentic, mouth-watering food native to the Rann of Kutch.
Here’s your guide to everything you need to know about the festival.
What to do:
How to get there:
Rann Utsav is held at the Dhordo village, 80 km north of the Bhuj city in Kutch. The closest station and airport is at Bhuj from where you can drive down to the festival. There are also private luxury coaches that run from cities in Maharashtra and Gujarat to Bhuj.
Where to stay:
For a truly authentic experience, you can stay at the festival venue itself in gorgeous Swiss tents with wooden carpets and beautiful porches overlooking the desert. It is also the perfect opportunity to meet other like-minded travellers who are camping with you.
Whatever you do, just keep your eyes and your heart wide open, for there’s always a beautiful story, a pretty piece of art or a wonderful tune waiting to be seen and heard.
